About Data size converter

Converts between decimal storage units (kB, MB, GB, TB, PB), binary units (KiB, MiB, GiB, TiB, PiB) and bits. It keeps the two systems apart, which explains why a drive sold as 1 TB appears smaller in an operating system that divides by 1024.

How to use it

1. Choose a Unit family: Decimal (1000), Binary (1024) or Both, which is the default.
2. Type a number into the Amount box.

Questions about Data size converter

Is a kilobyte 1000 or 1024 bytes?

In this tool kB is 1000 bytes and KiB is 1024 bytes, matching the SI and IEC standards. The ambiguous uppercase KB is not offered.

Why is a megabit not a megabyte?

There are 8 bits in a byte. A 100 Mbit/s connection moves 12.5 MB per second, so divide link speeds by 8, not by 10.

Where does the missing space on a 1 TB drive go?

Nowhere. The drive holds 1,000,000,000,000 bytes, and dividing by 1024 three times gives 931.32 GiB, which some systems still label GB.

Which units are included?

Bits and bytes, kB to PB, KiB to PiB, and kilobits to gigabits in both decimal and binary form. There is nothing above petabytes.

What if my selected unit is not in the chosen family?

The menu falls back to a unit that is available in the family you picked, so the tool never shows an invalid pairing.
