Barcode Generator

About Barcode generator

Draws Code 128, EAN-13 and EAN-8 barcodes from your data and lets you download them as SVG or PNG. It encodes everything itself, including the check characters, and is aimed at people labeling stock, shipments, shelves or products who need a scannable symbol without design software.

How to use it

1. Choose a symbology in the Symbology toggle: Code 128, EAN-13 or EAN-8. Each starts with a sample value.
2. Replace the sample in Data to encode with your own text or digits.
3. Watch the Preview. The badges show the symbol type, the encoded text, the module count and the pixel size.
4. Adjust Module width, Bar height and Quiet zone, and switch Show human-readable text on or off.
5. Choose Download SVG, Download PNG or Copy SVG markup.

An EAN-13 with the check digit added for you

EAN-13, Data to encode: 978020137962 (12 digits)

Text 9780201379624, 95 modules, 230 x 108 px at default settings. Typing 9780201379625 instead is refused with: Check digit mismatch: expected 4, got 5.

When to use it

• Printing Code 128 labels for warehouse bins, asset tags or shipping cartons.
• Making a valid-looking EAN-13 to test a point-of-sale or inventory system.
• Checking whether the 13th digit on an existing product number is correct.
• Dropping a crisp SVG barcode into a document or label template that will be printed at several sizes.

Questions about Barcode generator

When should I pick Code 128 instead of EAN?

Code 128 encodes any ASCII character and is the usual choice for internal labels and logistics. EAN-13 and EAN-8 carry only digits and are for retail products that have been assigned numbers.

Does generating an EAN give me a real product number?

No. It only draws the digits you enter. Registered product numbers come from the GS1 numbering organization, and a made-up one may collide with someone else's product.

How do I make a UPC-A symbol?

There is no separate UPC-A button. Choose EAN-13 and type a 0 followed by the full 12-digit UPC, so 13 digits in total; scanners read that as the same UPC-A.

Why did Code 128 reject a character?

Code 128 covers ASCII codes 0 to 127 only. A character such as é gives a message that it is outside the range, so remove or transliterate it.

Why is the symbol shorter when the data is all digits?

Runs of digits are packed two per symbol using subset C, so 2024 takes two symbols instead of four. The tool switches between subsets A, B and C on its own.
