About Markdown table generator

Builds GitHub-flavored Markdown tables in a visual grid or from pasted CSV or TSV data. Set the alignment of each column, add and remove rows and columns, and copy Markdown whose source lines up in a monospace editor. Pipes and line breaks inside cells are escaped so the table does not fall apart.

How to use it

1. On the Build tab, edit the column headings and cells directly. The table starts with packages, versions and notes.
2. Set the alignment of each column with its left, center and right buttons.
3. Use Add row or Add column, remove one with its delete button, or press Reset to return to the starting table.
4. To start from a spreadsheet, open Import CSV / TSV, paste the data and press Import into builder. The first line becomes the header.
5. Toggle Pad cells so the raw Markdown lines up, then press Copy Markdown or Download .md.

When to use it

• Adding a comparison table to a README from numbers pasted out of a spreadsheet.
• Documenting request parameters in a pull request description.
• Cleaning up a hand-typed table so its columns line up in the source and review is easier.
• Converting a small CSV export into a table for a wiki page.

Questions about Markdown table generator

How is the delimiter detected?

It counts tabs, commas and semicolons on the first line. Tab wins ties, and a semicolon beats a comma only when there are strictly more of them. Quoted cells may still contain the delimiter.

What happens to a pipe or a newline inside a cell?

A pipe is escaped with a backslash, and a newline becomes a line break tag, because a real newline would end the row. Backslashes are doubled so they survive rendering.

What do the alignment markers look like?

Left is a plain run of dashes, center is a colon on each side of the dashes and right is dashes ending in a colon. With padding on, the dashes widen to match the column.

Can rows have different lengths?

On import, shorter rows are padded with empty cells to match the widest one, and blank header cells are named Column 1, Column 2 and so on.

Does Markdown support merged cells or several header rows?

No. GitHub-flavored tables have exactly one header row and no merged cells. For anything more complex you will need to write the table in HTML.
