PNG to ICO Converter

About PNG to ICO

Builds a real .ico file from a PNG, which is what browsers, Windows shortcuts and desktop apps want for favicons and program icons. You choose the pixel size, and the image is scaled to fit inside a transparent square so logos are not stretched.

How to use it

1. Drop a PNG file onto the upload area; the source preview confirms it loaded.
2. Pick an Icon size button: 16×16, 32×32, 48×48, 64×64, 128×128, 256×256, or Original to keep the source proportions.
3. Or type a Custom size between 1 and 256 pixels into the field beside the buttons.
4. Press Convert to ICO, inspect the Output preview, and choose Download ICO.

Wide logo turned into a 32 pixel favicon

A 512×256 PNG logo with Icon size set to 32×32.

A 32×32 canvas. The logo is scaled by 0.0625 to 32×16 and centered, leaving 8 transparent pixels above and below. The ICO begins with the bytes 00 00 01 00 01 00, and its directory entry reads 20 20 00 00 01 00 20 00 (32 wide, 32 high, one plane, 32 bits per pixel).

When to use it

• Creating favicon.ico for a website from an existing PNG logo.
• Making a desktop shortcut or installer icon for a small Windows utility.
• Producing a 256-pixel icon for an app that shows large tiles.
• Testing how a mark reads at 16 pixels before committing to a design.

Questions about PNG to ICO

Does the ICO hold more than one size?

No. Each file contains a single image at the size you chose. If a platform wants several sizes bundled together, convert once per size and combine them with a dedicated icon editor.

Is transparency preserved?

Yes. The file stores a 32-bit image, and the PNG bytes are embedded directly, so soft edges and see-through regions survive. Padding added to reach a square is transparent as well.

What size should a favicon be?

32×32 covers most browser tabs and is the default here. 16×16 is the classic minimum, and 48×48 or larger helps with high-density screens and Windows site tiles.

What does Original do with a large image?

It keeps the source proportions and pixel size. ICO entries cap at 256 pixels per side, so an image larger than that is scaled down to fit within 256 while keeping its aspect ratio. Smaller images keep their exact size.
