PNG to WEBP Converter

About PNG to WEBP

Converts a PNG to WebP, a format designed for the web that usually produces smaller files than PNG or JPG at similar visual quality. Unlike JPG it keeps the alpha channel, so logos and cutouts stay transparent while still shrinking.

How to use it

1. Drop a PNG file onto the box, or click it and choose one.
2. Set the Quality slider between 10 and 100; it opens at 85.
3. Click Convert to WebP and let the browser finish encoding.
4. Compare the Output preview with your source, then press Download WebP.

Transparent sticker for a web page

A PNG icon with soft, semi-transparent shadow edges, quality 85.

A WebP with the same pixel size and the same see-through areas. Unlike a JPG conversion, no white background is added, so the shadow blends into whatever page color sits behind it.

When to use it

• Reducing image weight on a landing page to help Largest Contentful Paint.
• Replacing PNG product cutouts with lighter files that still have transparency.
• Exporting illustrations for a CMS that accepts modern formats.
• Checking how much smaller a page's images could be before a bulk migration.

Questions about PNG to WEBP

Is the output lossy or lossless?

It follows the browser canvas encoder, which writes lossy WebP controlled by the Quality slider. Values near 100 keep detail closely, but this is not a strict lossless mode.

Does it keep transparency?

Yes. WebP supports a full 8-bit alpha channel, and the converter does not paint a white backdrop for this target, so soft edges and shadows come through.

Will every device open the result?

Current Chrome, Edge, Firefox and Safari all display WebP. Very old software, some email clients and certain print workflows still do not, so keep a PNG or JPG fallback where that matters.

What if my browser cannot make WebP?

Some browsers, historically Safari, cannot encode WebP from a canvas. The tool detects this and shows an error instead of saving a wrongly labeled file, so switch to a Chromium-based browser or Firefox.
