About Text to speech

This page reads your text aloud using the speech voices that come with your browser and operating system. You can choose a voice, adjust speaking rate, pitch and volume, then play, pause, resume or stop. It suits proofreading by ear, testing how a script sounds, or listening to a passage. The audio plays in the browser only; nothing is recorded or exported.

How to use it

1. Type or paste the passage into the Text to Speak box.
2. Pick a voice from the Voice menu, which lists whatever voices your device offers along with their language. A voice matching your browser language is preselected when one exists.
3. Adjust the Rate, Pitch and Volume sliders to taste before you start.
4. Press Play, use Pause and Resume to hold your place, and press Stop to cancel.

When to use it

• Proofreading an email or essay by ear, where awkward sentences and missing words are easier to hear than see.
• Checking how a product name, acronym or foreign phrase is pronounced by a standard voice.
• Rehearsing a talk at a chosen pace by matching the Rate slider to your target speed.
• Listening to a long passage while you rest your eyes or do something else.

Questions about Text to speech

Which voices will I see?

Only those installed on your device and exposed by your browser, so the list differs between Windows, macOS, Android and iOS and between browsers. Installing extra system voices makes them appear here.

What are the slider ranges?

Rate and pitch run from 0.5 to 2.0 in steps of 0.1, with 1.0 as normal. Volume runs from 0 to 1. All three start at 1, and changes apply the next time you press Play.

Can I download the speech as an audio file?

No. Browsers do not let a page capture what the speech engine plays, so the tool has no save button and says so on the page. Use your operating system's audio recorder if you need a recording.

Why does the page say speech is not supported?

Your browser does not provide the Web Speech synthesis feature. Recent versions of Chrome, Edge, Safari and Firefox generally do, so try updating or switching browsers.

Is my text sent to your server?

No. This page hands the text to your browser's own speech engine and makes no request to our server. Some browsers use a vendor cloud voice, and those follow that vendor's own rules.
