Whitespace Remover

About Whitespace remover

The whitespace remover cleans up messy spacing with independent switches: trim lines, collapse repeated spaces, remove blank lines, convert tabs to spaces or back, normalize line endings, or strip every space entirely. Before and after counts show what changed. It suits text pasted from PDFs, emails and spreadsheets, and code that has drifted between tabs and spaces.

How to use it

1. Paste your text into the Messy text box.
2. Pick options under Cleanup options. Collapse repeated spaces, Trim each line and Remove leading/trailing blank lines are on to start with.
3. If you convert tabs, set the Tab width (spaces), from 1 to 16 with a default of 4.
4. Check the Cleaned text and the character difference, then copy or download it.

When to use it

• Straightening text copied out of a PDF or web page that carries extra spaces and stray blank lines.
• Making a code snippet consistent by converting between tabs and leading spaces.
• Converting Windows CRLF line endings to Unix LF before committing a file.
• Stripping all whitespace from a value such as a card or serial number pasted with spaces.

Questions about Whitespace remover

In what order are the options applied?

Always the same order: line endings, tabs to spaces, spaces to tabs, collapse spaces, trim lines, remove blank lines, trim blank edges and finally remove all whitespace. The order does not depend on which switch you flipped first.

How does Remove all whitespace interact with the others?

It overrides them. When it is on, every space, tab and line break is deleted and the other switches are ignored, so the output becomes one unbroken string.

Are tabs replaced with a fixed number of spaces?

No, tabs expand to the next tab stop, as a code editor does. With a width of 4, a tab after two characters becomes two spaces, not four, so columns stay aligned.

Will it change my line endings by accident?

No. Existing CRLF or LF endings are preserved unless you switch on Normalize line endings, so a Windows file stays a Windows file.
