Converts a BMP image to JPG with an adjustable quality setting, so a multi-megabyte bitmap becomes a photo-friendly file a fraction of the size. JPG is lossy: it trades a little detail for much smaller files, which suits photographs and scans far better than screenshots with sharp text. Choose it when size matters more than a perfect pixel-for-pixel copy.
A 24-bit BMP, 1920 x 1080 pixels. Rows are 5,760 bytes (already a multiple of 4), so the size is 5,760 x 1080 + 54 = 6,220,854 bytes. Quality left at 85.
A 1920 x 1080 JPG written at quality 0.85. Any transparent area would be painted white first, since JPEG has no alpha channel.
Good to know. The output is a single baseline image written by the browser's own JPEG encoder, so exact file sizes vary slightly between Chrome, Edge and Firefox at the same quality.
.bmp allowed.
