Turns a Windows bitmap (.bmp) into a PNG using your browser's canvas, keeping every pixel value while shrinking the file.
Turns a Windows bitmap (.bmp) into a PNG using your browser's canvas, keeping every pixel value while shrinking the file. BMP stores pixels essentially uncompressed, so even a plain screenshot weighs megabytes; PNG applies lossless compression to the same data. Use it when an old program, scanner or capture tool hands you a BMP and you need something smaller that every website and chat app accepts.
A 24-bit BMP, 1024 x 768 pixels. Each row is 3,072 bytes, so the file is 3,072 x 768 + 54 header bytes = 2,359,350 bytes.
A PNG of the same 1024 x 768 pixels with identical color values, saved under a name like maffei-3f9a12bc.png. Flat-color graphics compress dramatically; photographs shrink less.
Good to know. Re-encoding through a canvas drops any metadata stored in the source file. Very large bitmaps need enough free memory to hold the decoded pixels while converting.
.bmp allowed.
