Do I need an API key?

No. These are ordinary links that open Google Maps, not requests to its developer service. Google Maps is contacted only when someone opens the link.

When should I use coordinates instead of a search?

Use coordinates when a name or address could match several places, or when the spot has none. Enter decimal degrees with latitude first; the tool checks latitude is between -90 and 90 and longitude between -180 and 180.

Why are spaces written as %20 and not plus signs?

Plus signs are valid in form data but a few Maps clients show them literally. Percent encoding avoids that, and waypoints are joined with an encoded pipe character.

What if I leave the Origin blank?

Only the destination is required. Google decides the start, normally the viewer's current location, when no origin is given.

How many stops are allowed?

The tool does not limit them, but Google's own documentation for these links allows up to nine waypoints, so keep routes within that.

Adding a Find us link to a shop's contact page that opens the right pin.
