HEIC to PNG Converter

About HEIC to PNG

Opens an iPhone-style HEIC or HEIF photo and saves it as a lossless PNG. Because most browsers cannot display HEIC natively, the tool decodes it in your browser with a WebAssembly decoder first, then writes the pixels out without any further compression loss.

How to use it

1. Drop a .heic or .heif file on the dropzone, or click to pick one; the decoder loads on first use.
2. Wait for the preview. Large photos can take a few seconds to decode.
3. Press Convert to PNG. There is no quality slider, because PNG keeps every pixel.
4. Select Download PNG when the Output shows up.

Full-size iPhone photo

A 4032×3024 HEIC, the usual size of a 12 megapixel iPhone shot.

A 4032×3024 PNG named like maffei-1a2b3c4d.png. Pixel dimensions are unchanged, though the file is many times larger than the HEIC, and metadata such as location is not carried over.

When to use it

• Opening iPhone photos in Windows software that lacks HEIC support.
• Getting a lossless copy of a photo for retouching before final export.
• Feeding a HEIC screenshot or graphic into a design tool that wants PNG.
• Archiving a photo in a format that any viewer can open years from now.

Questions about HEIC to PNG

Why is the PNG so much larger than my HEIC?

HEIC uses modern video-style compression that is very efficient for photos, while PNG uses general-purpose lossless compression. It is normal for the PNG to be five to ten times larger.

Why does the first HEIC take longer?

The decoder is a WebAssembly module of over a megabyte, and it is downloaded only when a HEIC file is chosen. After the first load, later conversions in the same session start faster.

What if it says the file could not be decoded?

The file may be corrupt, or use a HEIC variant the decoder does not support. Re-exporting it from the Photos app, or picking JPG in your phone camera settings, is the quickest fix.

Are Live Photos or bursts converted?

Only a single still image is produced. The video portion of a Live Photo is a separate file and is not part of the result.
