Background Remover

About Background Remover

Background Remover cuts the subject out of a photo and leaves the rest transparent, using the RMBG-1.4 machine-learning model running inside your browser. It suits product shots, portraits and profile pictures. You can touch up the edges with an eraser and restore brush, fill in a new background color, and download a PNG.

How to use it

1. Drop a photo into the upload area. The first time, the page downloads the AI model, about 50 MB, and shows progress.
2. Wait while the model runs. The Compare tab then shows a slider between Original and Removed.
3. Open the Touch up tab to Erase leftovers or Restore parts that were cut by mistake. Set Brush size from 5 to 80 pixels and use Undo or Redo.
4. Choose a Background: Transparent, White, Black, Red, Blue, Green or Custom. Switch on Trim to object to crop away the empty margin.
5. Pick an export size of 25, 50, 75 or 100 percent, or a custom width, and press Download PNG.

When to use it

• Making a clean product cut-out for a marketplace listing with a white background.
• Creating a transparent portrait for a slide, poster or website team page.
• Removing a distracting background from a profile picture before adding a solid color.
• Preparing sticker or icon artwork from a photograph of an object.

Questions about Background Remover

Does my photo leave my computer?

No. The model runs locally through WebAssembly. The only network traffic is the one-time download of the model files and runtime code, after which they are cached in your browser and later runs need no download.

Why is the first run slow?

It has to fetch and load roughly 50 MB of model data. Later images on the same browser start much faster. Very large photos still take longer, since processing happens on your own hardware.

How good is it on hair and fine edges?

The model produces a soft mask, so hair is usually decent, but complex edges, glass or subjects similar in color to the background can leave halos. The Touch up brush exists for exactly these spots.

How many undo steps do I get?

Twenty brush strokes can be undone in the Touch up tab. Starting a new image resets the history.

What format do I get?

Always a PNG at the size you choose, with real transparency unless you picked a solid background. The export width is limited to 8192 pixels and the height follows the original proportions.
