MD5 turns any text or file into a 128-bit digest written as 32 hexadecimal characters. It is the right tool when you need to match a checksum a vendor published years ago or reproduce a legacy database column, and the wrong tool for anything that has to resist an attacker. The digest is computed in your browser by a hand-written RFC 1321 implementation, because the Web Crypto API deliberately leaves MD5 out.

Good to know. Files are read completely into memory as bytes before hashing, so very large files depend on how much memory your browser can spare. For newer checksums use the SHA generator or the File hash checker instead.
