About Text wrapper

The text wrapper inserts real line breaks so that no line is longer than a column width you choose, always breaking between words. A second tab does the opposite and joins hard-wrapped lines back into paragraphs. It is meant for plain-text email, commit messages, code comments and README files, where a fixed line length keeps things readable.

How to use it

1. Paste your text into the Input text box and pick the Wrap tab.
2. Drag the Column width slider. Its default is 72, a common choice for email, while 80 suits code comments.
3. Set the Hanging indent (spaces) if continuation lines should be indented, and switch on Preserve existing line breaks or Hard-break words longer than the width as needed.
4. Copy or download the wrapped text, or switch to the Unwrap tab to reverse the process.

When to use it

• Formatting a Git commit body to the traditional 72-column limit.
• Reflowing a long paragraph for a plain-text email so it displays well in any client.
• Wrapping documentation or a code comment to a project's line-length rule.
• Undoing hard wraps in text copied from an email so it flows naturally in a new document.

Questions about Text wrapper

What happens to a word that is longer than the width?

By default it sits alone on its own line and overflows, so long URLs stay unbroken. Turn on Hard-break words longer than the width to cut it into pieces instead.

How does Preserve existing line breaks work?

When on, each existing line is wrapped separately and none are merged. When off, consecutive lines are combined into one paragraph first, and only blank lines separate paragraphs.

What do the Unwrap options do?

Unwrap joins lines with the Join separator, a space by default, and Keep blank lines as paragraph boundaries retains paragraph breaks. Lines are trimmed before joining.

How is line length measured?

By characters, counting each Unicode code point once, so an emoji counts as one. It does not measure pixel width, so a proportional font will not line up exactly.
