URL Redirect Checker

About URL Redirect Checker

A link that looks like one address can pass through several before reaching a page. This tool follows the redirect chain one hop at a time, listing each status code and target, then shows the original and final address. It is useful for auditing migrations, HTTPS upgrades and affiliate or shortened links.

How to use it

1. Enter the address in the URL field. If you leave off the scheme, http:// is assumed.
2. Select Check Redirects. The address is sent to our server, which makes the requests.
3. Read the headline: No redirects, or the number of redirects found.
4. Compare Original URL with Final URL.
5. Study the Redirect Chain table to see the status code, source and target of every hop.

A plain HTTP address that upgrades

http://example.com/old-page

If the site answers 301 to https://example.com/old-page, the result shows 1 redirect found with the HTTPS upgrade badge, one row in the chain with status 301, and the same address on https as the Final URL.

When to use it

• Confirming that every old URL after a site migration lands on its new page with a permanent 301.
• Finding redirect loops or unnecessarily long chains that slow down page loads.
• Checking that the http:// and www variants of a domain all end at one canonical address.
• Revealing the real destination behind a tracking or shortened link.

Questions about URL Redirect Checker

How many redirects will it follow?

Up to 15 hops, all within a single ten second budget. If the chain is longer or slower than that, you receive an error message instead of a partial result.

Does it use GET or HEAD requests?

It sends HEAD requests and reads the Location header of any 3xx answer. A few servers treat HEAD differently from GET, so a chain can differ slightly from what a browser sees.

Will it detect JavaScript or meta refresh redirects?

No. Only HTTP redirects with a Location header are counted. Redirects triggered by a script or a refresh tag inside the page require a real browser to observe.

Why was my address rejected?

Only http and https are allowed, and hosts that resolve to private, loopback or internal network addresses are refused. This protects the server from being used to probe internal systems.

What does the HTTPS upgrade badge mean?

It appears when you started with an http:// address and at least one hop points to an https:// address, confirming the site moves visitors onto an encrypted connection.
