About Broken link checker

Paste a list of addresses and this tool tests each one, reporting the status code, redirect count, final destination and response time. It checks only the URLs you supply and does not crawl a site, so it suits quick audits of a resource list, a bibliography or the links from a document.

How to use it

1. Paste your links into the box labeled URLs to check, one per line. Commas and spaces also separate entries.
2. Watch the counter under the box, which shows how many entries are ready and warns above 20.
3. Select Check links. The list is sent to our server, which makes the requests.
4. Read the headline for how many links are broken and how many were redirected.
5. Use the Results and Redirect chains tables to see each status, final URL and time.

Questions about Broken link checker

Is there a limit on how many links I can check?

Yes. Each run checks at most 20 unique URLs, four at a time, and the pasted text may not exceed 8,000 characters. Any extra entries are dropped, so run the remainder as a second batch.

How does it decide a link is broken?

A link counts as broken when the final response is not a success status or the request fails outright, such as a timeout after eight seconds or a DNS error.

Why does the Method column sometimes show GET?

The tool tries HEAD first to save bandwidth. Only when a server answers 405 Method Not Allowed does it retry with GET, and it never reads the response body.

Does it follow redirects?

Yes, up to five hops per link. It records each hop and the final URL, and the redirect count is shown so long chains stand out.

What is normalized before checking?

Entries without a scheme get https added, surrounding brackets and trailing punctuation are trimmed, and duplicates are removed ignoring case. Non-http schemes are skipped.
