About Wayback Machine

This tool asks the Internet Archive whether the Wayback Machine holds a saved copy of a page. It reports the closest snapshot, when it was captured and the HTTP status recorded at that moment. Google retired its public cached-page links in early 2024, so there is no Google cache to check and the Wayback Machine is now the practical way to view an old or deleted page.

How to use it

1. Paste the full page address into the URL field.
2. Select Check Wayback. The address is sent to our server, which queries the archive for you.
3. Read the status: Snapshot available or No snapshot found.
4. Note the Archived time, shown in UTC, and the status badge captured with it.
5. Select Open the snapshot to view the saved page, or Browse every capture to see all dates on the archive's calendar.
6. If there is no snapshot, select Save this page to the archive now to ask the archive to capture the page.

When to use it

• Recovering text from a page whose owner has deleted it or let the site expire.
• Checking whether a page you cite in research has an archived copy you can link to instead.
• Confirming when your own site was first captured, for example after a domain purchase.
• Seeing what status a URL returned at capture time, such as a redirect or a 404.

Questions about Wayback Machine

Where does the data come from?

Our server calls the Internet Archive availability API and returns its answer. The address you enter is included in that request, and nothing is fetched from the target site itself.

Which snapshot do I get?

Only the single closest capture reported by the API, not a full list. To see every date, use the Browse every capture link, which opens the archive's own calendar for that address.

Why does it say no snapshot when I know the site exists?

The archive only stores pages its crawlers or users saved. New pages, pages excluded by robots rules and pages that need a login may never have been captured.

What does the badge number mean?

It is the HTTP status the archive recorded when it captured the page. A 200 is a normal page, while 301 or 302 means the capture was a redirect and 404 means it recorded an error page.

Is there a time limit?

Yes. The archive is sometimes slow, so the request is abandoned after eight seconds and the result reads Lookup failed with a timeout message. That is not the same as No snapshot found, so try again a little later.
