YouTube Thumbnail Downloader

About YouTube Thumbnail Downloader

This tool pulls the preview image of any YouTube video at every resolution YouTube stores, from a 120 by 90 stub up to 1280 by 720. It is handy when you need the cover image for a blog post, a slide, a video review or an archive, and you would rather not screenshot the player.

How to use it

1. Paste a YouTube link, or just the 11-character video ID, into the YouTube Video URL box.
2. Press Get Thumbnails. The page extracts the ID and shows a grid of the five size tiers.
3. Wait a moment while each tier is checked. Tiers the video does not have are marked Not available and their buttons are disabled.
4. Press Download on the tier you want to save a JPEG, or use the copy button to grab the direct image address.

Video ID dQw4w9WgXcQ. Tiers: Max Resolution 1280x720, Standard Definition 640x480, High Quality 480x360, Medium Quality 320x180, Default 120x90. The max-resolution download is saved as youtube-dQw4w9WgXcQ-maxresdefault.jpg.

When to use it

• Grabbing a high-resolution cover image to illustrate a blog post that embeds the video.
• Comparing your own thumbnail against competing videos at full size before you redesign it.
• Saving the frame YouTube chose for an older upload so you can reference it in a content audit.
• Collecting small 320 by 180 previews for a link roundup or a newsletter section.

Questions about YouTube Thumbnail Downloader

Which links does it understand?

Standard watch links, youtu.be short links, Shorts, embed, live and old-style /v/ links all work, and so does a bare 11-character ID. Extra parameters such as timestamps or playlist IDs are ignored.

Why is the Max Resolution tier missing for some videos?

YouTube only generates the 1280 by 720 image for videos uploaded at HD or higher. For older or low-resolution uploads it returns a small grey placeholder instead, which the tool detects by its width and marks as unavailable.

Does the request go through your server?

Yes. Our site cannot load images from YouTube's image host directly, so the video ID and chosen tier are sent to a small proxy on our server, which fetches the JPEG and hands it back. Only those two values are used to build the request.

Am I allowed to reuse the image?

The thumbnail belongs to the video's creator or channel. Downloading is technical, not a license, so get permission or rely on a recognized exception such as commentary before publishing it elsewhere.
