HEIC to WEBP Converter

About HEIC to WEBP

Converts an iPhone HEIC photo to WebP, a format that opens in every current browser and is well suited to websites. A quality slider lets you decide how small to make it. HEIC itself is not supported by most browsers and many Windows and Linux programs, so this conversion is often the first step in sharing a phone photo.

How to use it

1. Drag a .heic or .heif photo into the drop zone, or click to browse for a .heic or .heif file.
2. Wait for the Source preview while the on-page decoder unpacks the photo.
3. Adjust the Quality slider between 10 and 100; it starts at 85.
4. Press Convert to WebP and view the Output panel.
5. Press Download WebP, or Reset for another photo.

When to use it

• Publishing iPhone photos on a blog or store page without the weight of full-size JPEGs.
• Sharing a phone photo with someone on Windows or Linux whose viewer cannot open HEIC.
• Building a gallery of web-ready images from a camera roll export.
• Comparing the byte size of the same photo at several slider settings.

Questions about HEIC to WEBP

Why convert HEIC to WebP instead of JPG?

WebP gets a similar look in fewer bytes and supports transparency. Choose JPG only when the receiving program predates WebP, which was widely supported by browsers only after 2020.

Is going from HEIC to WebP a second round of lossy compression?

Yes. The HEIC is decoded to full pixels, then encoded again at your chosen quality. At 85 or above the added loss is rarely noticeable in photographs.

Does it keep my photo's dimensions?

Yes. The output has exactly the pixel width and height of the decoded photo, so a 4032 x 3024 shot stays that size. Nothing is resized in this tool.

Why does the first file take longer?

The HEIC decoder is a WebAssembly module over a megabyte in size. It downloads only once you select a HEIC file, and it stays cached for later conversions.
