Image Enhance

About Image Enhance

Image Enhance sharpens soft photos, softens grain, and enlarges the picture by up to four times, with a before and after slider so you can judge the effect. It is for improving mildly blurry snapshots and scans, not for repairing badly damaged images. All processing uses standard filters on your own device.

How to use it

1. Drop an image in. It is enhanced right away with Sharpen at 60, Denoise at 0 and Upscale at 1x.
2. Drag Sharpen from 0 to 200 for crisper edges, and Denoise from 0 to 100 to soften grain.
3. Choose an Upscale Resolution of 1x, 1.5x, 2x, 3x or 4x. The output size is shown under the buttons.
4. Drag the divider in the Before / After comparison, or press Auto Enhance to set Sharpen 80 and Denoise 10.
5. Press Download on the result card to save the PNG.

The pixel ceiling

A 3000 x 2000 photo at 2x, versus at 1.5x

At 2x the result would be 6000 x 4000 (24 million pixels), above the 16 million limit, so an error explains it. At 1.5x the result is 4500 x 3000 (13.5 million) and works.

When to use it

• Crisping up a slightly soft photo taken with a phone in low light.
• Reducing visible grain in a high-ISO shot before sharing it.
• Enlarging a small logo or thumbnail for a slide when no larger original exists.
• Cleaning up a scanned print before adding it to an archive.

Questions about Image Enhance

Does upscaling add real detail?

No. Enlarging uses the browser's normal resampling, which interpolates between existing pixels. Edges look smoother and can be sharpened, but fine detail that was never captured cannot be invented.

How does the Sharpen slider work?

It applies an unsharp mask: a one-pixel blur is subtracted from the image and the difference is added back, scaled by the slider divided by 100. Above about 100 you may see bright halos along edges.

What does Denoise really do?

It blends the image with a very light Gaussian blur of at most 1.5 pixels. This reduces fine grain but also softens texture, so raise Sharpen a little afterward if needed.

Why did I get a too large error?

Output is capped at 16 million pixels to keep your browser from running out of memory. Lower the upscale factor or start from a smaller picture.
