About WEBP to AVIF

Re-encodes a WebP as AVIF, the newer AV1-based still-image format that usually beats WebP on size for photographs. Both are lossy and both support transparency, so the gain is modest and depends on the picture. The AVIF is written by an encoder that runs inside your browser tab, so it works in Chrome, Edge, Firefox and Safari.

How to use it

1. Drop a WebP file onto the drop zone, or click to find a .webp file.
2. Review the Source preview to confirm the right file is loaded.
3. Choose a value on the Quality slider; the default is 85.
4. Press Convert to AVIF and wait a moment, because AVIF encoding takes longer than WebP and JPG.
5. Check the Output panel and press Download AVIF.

Questions about WEBP to AVIF

Is going from WebP to AVIF worth it?

Sometimes. AVIF typically lands 20 percent or more below WebP for photos, but you are compressing already-compressed pixels, so the second pass adds its own artifacts. Start from the original source image when you have one.

Why does the first conversion take longer than usual?

The AVIF encoder is a WebAssembly module that is downloaded only when you first convert to AVIF. Once it has loaded, later conversions in the same tab start right away.

Does transparency survive?

Yes. No white background is painted for AVIF, both formats carry an alpha channel, and the encoder writes it into the AVIF file.

Can I control the compression level?

Yes. The Quality slider goes from 10 to 100 and starts at 85. Lower values make a smaller file with softer detail, while higher values keep more detail and produce a larger file.
