PNG to AVIF Converter

About PNG to AVIF

PNG to AVIF re-encodes a lossless PNG as an AVIF file, a modern format that is often far smaller for photographs and gradients. Transparency in the PNG is carried over. Use it to slim down website graphics, screenshots or app assets when your target browsers support AVIF.

How to use it

1. Drop a PNG file onto the drop area labeled Drop a PNG file here, or click to browse.
2. Check the source preview and file size.
3. Set the Quality slider, which starts at 85, then press Convert to AVIF. The picture is re-encoded at that quality.
4. Review the Output preview, then press Download AVIF. The Copy button copies the encoded data.

When to use it

• Shrinking a large screenshot or illustration used on a documentation page.
• Preparing transparent product cut-outs for a shop that serves modern formats.
• Testing how much a PNG-heavy page would save by switching to AVIF.
• Creating small versions of app artwork for a web app that serves modern image formats.

Questions about PNG to AVIF

Is the conversion lossless?

No. The PNG is lossless, but the AVIF is written with lossy compression at the Quality slider setting, so tiny color shifts and softened fine detail are possible. Keep your PNG as the master.

Is transparency preserved?

Yes. Unlike JPG output, the tool does not paint a white background for AVIF, so transparent regions in the PNG remain transparent in the AVIF file.

Why is AVIF conversion slower than PNG to WebP?

AVIF encoding does more work than JPEG or WebP. Where your browser can encode AVIF itself, the tool uses that. Otherwise it loads a WebAssembly encoder on first use, so the first conversion in a tab takes longest.

Can I choose the quality?

Yes. The Quality slider starts at 85 out of 100. AVIF files are usually smaller than WebP files at similar visual quality, so a lower setting often still looks fine.

Will it always be smaller than the PNG?

Usually for photographic images, often by a large margin. A tiny flat icon can occasionally come out about the same size or larger because of AVIF's container overhead.
