AVIF to PNG Converter

About AVIF to PNG

Converts an AVIF image to PNG so it opens in editors, presentation software and older programs that do not read AVIF yet. PNG is lossless and keeps transparency, so the AVIF's pixels are stored exactly as your browser decodes them. Expect the PNG to be much larger than the AVIF, since AVIF is among the most compact formats for photographs.

How to use it

1. Drop an AVIF file onto the drop zone, or click to pick a .avif file.
2. Check the Source preview. If it stays blank, your browser may not be able to decode AVIF.
3. Press Convert to PNG. There is no quality slider for this target.
4. Look at the Output panel and press Download PNG.
5. Press Reset to clear the current file.

A 1200 x 800 AVIF photo

An AVIF of 1200 x 800 pixels, perhaps 80 KB.

A PNG of 1200 x 800 pixels. Uncompressed that is 3,840,000 bytes (1,200 x 800 x 4), and PNG typically lands several times larger than the AVIF for a photograph.

When to use it

• Opening an AVIF saved from a website in an editor that has no AVIF plugin.
• Keeping a transparent AVIF graphic transparent while moving it to a universally supported format.
• Creating an exact working copy before retouching a picture.
• Attaching an image to a document type that rejects AVIF.

Questions about AVIF to PNG

Which browsers can read AVIF for this to work?

Chrome 85 and later, Firefox 93 and later, and Safari 16.4 and later decode AVIF. In an older browser the image will not load and the tool reports a failure to load it.

Is the PNG an exact copy of the AVIF?

It is an exact copy of the decoded pixels, but at 8 bits per channel. If the AVIF used 10-bit color or HDR, the extra precision is reduced when drawn to the canvas.

Does transparency stay?

Yes. The tool draws the image on a transparent canvas and only adds a white background for JPG output, so alpha in the AVIF carries into the PNG.

Why is the PNG so much larger?

AVIF discards detail your eyes barely notice and uses advanced prediction. PNG stores every pixel losslessly with much simpler compression, so photographic content inflates.
