AVIF to ICO Converter

About AVIF to ICO

Builds a Windows icon (.ico) from an AVIF image. Pick a standard favicon or app-icon size and the picture is scaled to fit a transparent square, keeping its proportions. It is useful when your logo or artwork only exists in a modern format that icon editors do not open.

How to use it

1. Drop an AVIF file onto the drop zone, or click to choose a .avif file.
2. Verify the Source preview so you know the image decoded properly.
3. Select an Icon size (16, 32, 48, 64, 128 or 256 pixels), choose Original to keep the proportions, or enter a Custom size from 1 to 256.
4. Press Convert to ICO and check the Output panel.
5. Press Download ICO to save the file.

A square logo at the maximum size

An AVIF logo of 800 x 800 pixels with icon size 256 selected.

A 256 x 256 icon. In the ICO directory the width and height bytes are both stored as 0, because the format uses 0 to mean 256. The image inside is a 32-bit PNG.

When to use it

• Turning a brand mark delivered as AVIF into a favicon.ico for a website.
• Making a desktop shortcut icon from artwork downloaded in AVIF.
• Producing a compact 16 or 32 pixel icon for a plugin or small Windows utility.

Questions about AVIF to ICO

Does the icon keep the AVIF's transparency?

Yes. The image is drawn on a transparent square and embedded as a PNG with an alpha channel, so cutout logos stay cutout and only leftover margin is see-through.

Will a very wide or tall AVIF be cropped?

No. It is scaled to fit entirely inside the square and centered, leaving transparent margins. Crop the image first if you want the artwork to fill the whole icon.

Can I put several sizes in one ICO?

Each file contains a single image. Convert once per size and combine them in an icon editor if a multi-resolution file is required.

What size do browsers want for a favicon?

32 by 32 is the common default and 16 by 16 is the traditional minimum. Some platforms also look for 48 pixels or more, so pick to match where the icon will appear.
