About Image Compressor

The Image Compressor reduces the file size of a picture by lowering quality and limiting its longest side, and it reports how many bytes you saved. It runs a compression library in a background thread so the page stays responsive, which matters for large camera files. It is aimed at anyone who needs smaller uploads without opening an editor.

How to use it

1. Drop an image into the upload area or browse for a JPEG, PNG, WebP, GIF or BMP file up to 25 MB.
2. Set Quality with the slider, from 10 to 100 percent. The starting value is 80.
3. Enter a Max width (px). The default is 1920, and the limit is applied to the longer side of the image.
4. Choose an Output format: Auto keeps the original type, or force WebP, JPEG or PNG.
5. Switch on Preserve EXIF data if you want camera metadata kept, then press Compress Image and Download.

• Getting a set of holiday photos under a website's upload size limit.
• Trimming a large scan before attaching it to a job application.

Questions about Image Compressor

Does the Max width field limit width only?

It is applied to whichever side is longer. A tall portrait image with a Max width of 1920 will be scaled so its height is at most 1920, which makes portrait and landscape photos behave consistently.

Why did my PNG barely shrink?

PNG is lossless, so the quality slider has little effect on it. Switch the output format to WebP or JPEG for large savings on photographs, keeping in mind that JPEG cannot store transparency.

What does Preserve EXIF data do?

It keeps camera details such as date, exposure and any GPS location inside the compressed file. It is off by default, which removes metadata and shaves a little more size and some privacy risk.

How is the saving calculated?

The badge compares the compressed file's byte size with your original and shows the percentage removed, alongside the new size. If the result is not smaller, no percentage is shown.
