About Image Optimizer

The Image Optimizer shrinks a single photo or graphic for web delivery in one pass. You choose an output format, cap the width and set a quality level, then compare the before and after sizes. It suits people preparing hero images, product shots or blog photos that are far larger than any screen needs.

How to use it

1. Drop an image onto the upload area or press Select Image. Any image file up to 20 MB is accepted.
2. Pick an Output Format: JPEG, WebP or PNG. JPEG is selected by default.
3. Choose a Max Width from 3840, 1920, 1280, 800 or 400 pixels. Wider images are scaled down proportionally.
4. Move the Quality slider between 10 and 100. It disappears for PNG because PNG is lossless.
5. Press Optimize Image, check the optimized preview and sizes, then press Download Optimized Image.

The page is scaled to 1920 x 1440 px (3000 x 1920 / 4000, rounded), re-encoded at 80 percent quality and saved as yourphoto-optimized.jpg.

When to use it

• Reducing a 6 MB phone photo to a few hundred kilobytes before adding it to a page.
• Converting a large PNG screenshot to WebP for a documentation site.
• Creating a 400 pixel thumbnail version of a picture for a listing or card layout.
• Cutting the size of images before attaching them to an email with a strict attachment limit.

Questions about Image Optimizer

Will it ever make the image bigger?

It can. It never enlarges dimensions, but re-encoding an already tiny or heavily compressed file, or turning a JPEG into a PNG, can produce more bytes. When that happens the page simply reports the optimized size without a percentage saved.

What happens to transparent areas?

Choosing JPEG fills the canvas with white first, since JPEG cannot store transparency. WebP and PNG keep transparent pixels, so pick one of those for logos and cut-outs.

Is the size shown exact?

It is estimated from the encoded data rather than read from a saved file, so it can differ from the number your operating system shows by a few bytes. It is accurate enough for judging savings.

How is this different from the Image Compressor?

The optimizer is a simple one-pass resize and re-encode with width presets. The compressor uses a dedicated library in a background worker, can keep the original format automatically and has an option to preserve EXIF metadata.
