About PDF to Markdown

This tool extracts the text layer of a PDF and writes it as clean Markdown. It infers headings from font size, detects bulleted and numbered lists, rejoins wrapped lines, and lets you copy the result or download a .md file. It is aimed at notes, documentation and content that needs to move into other systems.

How to use it

1. Drop a PDF onto the drop zone, or click to browse for one.
2. Wait for the Reading page progress to finish.
3. Use the switch labeled Insert a horizontal rule between pages to decide whether each page break becomes a line of three dashes.
4. Review the text in the Markdown box and the page, character and line badges.
5. Select Copy to send it to the clipboard, or Download .md to save it.

When to use it

• Moving a PDF manual into a documentation repository that uses Markdown.
• Getting article text out of a PDF for a static site or note-taking app.

Questions about PDF to Markdown

How are headings detected?

Lines noticeably larger than the most common body size become headings, with 1.6 times or more as level one, 1.3 as level two and 1.15 as level three. Short bold lines become level three headings.

Does my PDF get uploaded?

No. The PDF is read in your browser, the Markdown is generated on the page, and the download is made locally. The file is never sent to our server.

Why is there a backslash in front of some lines?

A paragraph that happens to start with characters such as a hash, dash or number followed by a period would be misread as Markdown syntax, so the tool escapes it.

What are the size limits?

The PDF may be up to 50 MB and 500 pages. Beyond that, split it first with the PDF Split tool, because the whole document is held in browser memory.

Does it handle tables and images?

No. Only text is extracted, so images are omitted and tables come out as ordinary lines of text. Scanned PDFs without a text layer are rejected because OCR is not supported.
