About PDF to Word

This tool works in both directions. It reads the text of a PDF and rebuilds it as an editable Word document with headings, paragraphs and lists, or it turns a .docx file back into a PDF. Both conversions run in your browser and are aimed at text-heavy documents, not complex layouts.

How to use it

1. Check the direction badges, and select the swap button if you want the opposite conversion.
2. Drop a PDF, or a Word document when in the reverse direction, onto the drop zone.
3. For Word to PDF, choose A4 or Letter under Page size. Changing it re-renders without re-reading the file.
4. Read the result badges showing pages, headings, paragraphs, list items and file size.
5. Select Download .docx or Download .pdf.

How headings are recognized

A PDF with 11 pt body text, lines at 18 pt, 15 pt and 13 pt, and a short bold 11 pt line.

Heading 1 for 18 pt because it is 1.64 times the body size, Heading 2 for 15 pt at 1.36 times, Heading 3 for 13 pt at 1.18 times, and Heading 3 for the short bold line. The rest becomes paragraphs.

When to use it

• Editing the wording of a contract or letter that only exists as a PDF.
• Reusing text from an old report in a new document without retyping it.
• Turning a Word draft into a PDF for sharing on A4 or US Letter paper.
• Checking how much structure can be recovered from a PDF before choosing another approach.

Questions about PDF to Word

What carries over and what does not?

Text, headings, lists and page breaks convert in both directions. Images, table layout, fonts and colors are not preserved, so expect a clean text document instead of a visual copy.

Why does a scanned PDF fail?

A scan is a picture of a page with no text layer, and OCR is not supported yet. The tool reports that no selectable text was found instead of producing an empty file.

What size limits apply?

A PDF can be up to 50 MB and 500 pages. A Word file can be up to 25 MB. Larger PDFs are best divided first with the PDF Split tool.

Why do question marks appear in my PDF?

The PDF output uses a built-in font set. Characters outside it are replaced with a question mark, and the tool tells you how many were changed.

Are running headers and footers removed?

When reading a PDF, identical lines that sit at the same height on at least three pages are treated as headers or footers and dropped, along with hyphenation at line ends being joined back into words.
