List Alphabetizer

About List alphabetizer

The list alphabetizer sorts your items from A to Z or, with the Order menu, from Z to A. It uses language-aware comparison, so capital letters and accented letters land where a reader would expect rather than in raw character-code order. Paste a list one item per line, or split a single line on a comma, semicolon, pipe, tab or space, and get back a tidy sorted list.

How to use it

1. Paste your entries into the List Items box, one per line.
2. Change the Delimiter menu if the entries are on one line and separated by a comma, semicolon, pipe, tab or space.
3. Choose Ascending (A to Z) or Descending (Z to A) from the Order menu.
4. Click Alphabetize List, then copy the sorted output; the header states how many items were sorted, and the original stays below for reference.

Descending, with case and accents handled

cherry (order: descending)

When to use it

• Ordering a bibliography, glossary or list of names before publishing.
• Sorting a set of tags, keywords or category names so they are easy to scan.
• Preparing a list for comparison, since two sorted lists are simpler to check by eye.
• Alphabetizing a pasted set of file names or product titles from a spreadsheet.

Questions about List alphabetizer

Can I sort in descending order?

Yes. The Order menu offers Ascending (A to Z), which is the default, and Descending (Z to A). Descending is the exact opposite comparison, so the whole list flips, ties included.

Does capitalization affect the order?

Not in a way that separates upper and lower case. Comparison is locale-aware, so Apple and apple sit together, and with equal letters lowercase tends to come before uppercase, as in a before A. The page states this under the Order menu.

How are numbers inside items ordered?

Digits are compared one character at a time, not as whole numbers, so item10 comes before item2. Pad the numbers with zeros, for example item02, if you need numeric order.

What about spaces after commas?

Each item is trimmed before sorting, so pear, apple, fig sorts as pear, apple and fig rather than putting the space-led items first. The result is joined with the plain delimiter.
